How do I know if I have a polymorphic virus?

I had one of the scam calls. Caught me off guard. I allowed  them access to my computer. Person told me I had a polymorphic virus. They tried to sell me a service to fix any problem within the next year. I have problems with my e-mail freezes up. Sometimes I am unable to reply to my e-mails. The internet also has problems. Very slow, IE crashes. Running Windows 7 IE9.
